the federal government's job is to do three things.

1 provide education for the nation. ie pay the teachers.

2 provide for the safety of the people.

3 represent the people in international affairs.

that's it nothing more.

under education falls

nasa would fall because without research there isn't anything to teach.

under public safety falls

the military.

the federal highways. specifically the interstate which was designed and built for the rapid deployment of the military if the country should be invaded.

under representing us

1 sign trade treaties such as nafta.

2 declare war such as iraq. no matter what you call it when you authorize use of military force it is a war.

3 peace treaties.

and to pay for all of this they have a right to tax.

It's a good idea for everyone to have life insurance, snow tires (in snowy areas) and to own their own homes... are you going to advocate the government spring for these too?

no these do not empower the people. these take away from the people. education gives to the people.

Daniel,

No amount of classroom learning can give anything to a person that they can't obtain on their own.

In the intervening years between stints at college I've done pretty well for myself. I just find myself repeatedly bumping against the glass ceiling that has been there because I lacked a degree. I decided to do something about it.

ALL a diploma can give you is access. It is a credential, and it can open doors, but not unless you put it to use. You can get a good education from a library if you really set your mind to it. And, last time I checked, libraries ARE free.

I have no desire or inclination to waste other people's money forcing education on people who will never use it.

I specifically picked these examples because each of them DO empower people.

thank you gid for making my point.

snow tires, insurance or whatever can help you get to work but they cannot help you get the job.

Neither can a degree, danielost.

I just now received my degree. I've spent twenty years in the workforce without one, and never have had a problem obtaining gainful employment. Some of those jobs paid pretty well, too.

Are you aware how easy it would be to remain a professional student the rest of your life? I know one individual who has been working five years on a two year degree and refuses to get a real job because he gets enough extra money for going to school to tide him over.

as for the professional student we already have those.

as for incentives those who work hard under our current system would still work hard even if college was totally free. which is not what i am saying. you still have to go to work or get a loan to pay for rent and food for that 4 to 10 or more years.

but there are a lot of people who wanted to work hard under welfare who could not go and get work. and if education isn't empowering why do so many companies offer to pay for education. understanding that some of these employees will leave the job looking for better pay afterwords.

Experience has not proven this.

When I worked in the factory, danielost, I easily outproduced my coworkers by 75-100%. In one factory job, a coworker looked over at me and smiled, and said "and to think, I get paid exactkly as much as you do!"

Socialism (your proposal is essentially a form of it) does not create incentive, it inhibits it. If everyone can get a Master's, where's the value?

Not really. I just get greedy

greedy isn't bad as long as it doesn't rule your life.
