get x2 the threat. X3 is nice too but the collisions and freindly fire are significantly more troublesome.

Yea i think that is a problem in x2.
you would definately prefer x3 then which has vastly more moddable controls. Also if you want to get into x3 quickly, do what i did, get a universe map and a map of all the empty ship locations from the forums. After ejecting from your ship you can enter the empty ship by pressing SHIFT+E. Hold down the shift key and keep clicking E as you aproach, otherwise you die! Dying from collisions in X3 is more easy than passing through a Zenon sector(an enemy)!!

ok.
I tried playing startrek Amada some years ago. Paid AUD $80.00 bucks for it and only played it once before throwing it in the crap pile.
What happened was, i tried playing the tutorials but couldn't shoot anything. Now not being able to shoot anything wasn't what caused me to decide the game was garbage, no that descision came only after discovering the game did not have a streight forward answer as to 'why' i couldn't shoot anything.
Yea so spending 4 hours trying to squeeze a simple answer out of that game was enough for me! so in the crap pile it went.

Mystik, it's one of the best games recently. Space Rangers 2, which you can actually get through Stardock.
For the most part it's a very open universe. The game itself is a mixture of many different genres. The main portion is you flying around in a 2D environment, trading, fighting, questing, etc. You have a character that you can upgrade, along with the equipment, obviously. But some of the quests involve working in an old-school "Zork" kind of text adventure. There's the possibility of RTS, if you want to have robot fights (which I'm not so fond of, but mostly because my computer can't handle the graphics). And when you go into black holes you're in an arcade environment. Overall, it's a great game.

From your description it sounds like it would be superceeded by x2/x3 which is all of that but in 3d!
Still, at least i wouldn't have to worry about the stupid collisions and freindly fire that totally destroys enjoyment of the x universe.

Well, have you played Escape Velocity? Those graphics and that gameplay was superceded long ago, but those games are still top-notch. I wouldn't get SR2 for a graphical immersement, that's for sure. But it does feel like a "real" universe and the play from it is very good.

No, never heard of it?
The only reason i found galciv was that i saw it on the shelf in EB games! This is usually how i discover games but.... the problem now with EB games is that 90% of their shelf space is wasted on console games, with a tiny little section at the back for pc games. With such little room it is hard to fit in a very wide selection of games.... I hate consoles grrrrr F off and leave more room for real games PLEASE!
